E-Base for TRH Designs
Advanced Base Course Solutions for South African Road Standards
South African Layered Pavement System
E-Base is a Synthetic Resin Hydrocarbon Ground Glue Binder (Soil stabilizer) manufactured under license in South Africa. It is an environmentally friendly soil stabilization product that can be used as a direct replacement for cement or lime stabilization in road construction and other civil engineering applications.
Laboratory and field testing has demonstrated that E-Base significantly improves the engineering properties of stabilized materials. The product has been successfully used in various projects throughout Southern Africa, with consistently positive results in terms of strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
Enhanced Performance Characteristics
Strength
From 0.8MPa bitumen stabilisation to 6.9MPa UCS equivalent
Elasticity
The use of E-Base in road construction and civil engineering projects offers numerous advantages:
Water Resistance
Absorption reduced from 8% to 0.4% with 1% resin added
Temperature
Reduces temperature sensitivity of Bitumen

Proven Performance
Duvha, Witbank Case Study
The 100mm thick Ecobond base has carried approximately 30 MESAs (million equivalent standard axles) since 1996 and is in excellent condition.
The three-year-old adjacent conventional road had approximately 100 potholes from Feb. to May 2011, while the 15-year-old Ecobond section had none.
Key Advantages
- Works with wide variety of soils
- Effective with fine sand (5MPa UCS)
- Reduces material import costs
- Shorter construction time
- Better roads at standard costs
Application Types
- Non-continuously bound
- Partially bound
- Bound pavement layer
E-Base is supplied as a ready-to-use liquid that is mixed with aggregates during the construction process. Key specifications include:
Depending on aggregate, binder content and resin to bitumen ratio used
